Forgotten Summers: The Story of the Citizens' Military Training Camps, 1921-1940 by Donald M. Kington,
From 1921 to 1940, young men from all over the nation zealously joined in month-long summer camps run by the U.S. Army. Many drew on soldiering skills learned at Citizens' Military Training Camps in service with America's fighting forces in World War II. Two future U.S. presidents (Truman and Reagan) took part; a future literary giant (Robert Penn Warren's poem is on p. xiii) was inspired to write his first poem while in training; and three of the country's most esteemed military leaders (MacArthur, Marshall and Pershing) played major roles.
